Boho, it’s becoming one of the latest buzz words in the interior world. Just plug in a few key words on the Pinterest search engine and it’s pretty simple to see there is a new interior trend that everyone is LOVING – me included! It’s a little shift towards that more relaxed, carefree approach to living. Where anything goes and eclectic is key.
It’s a place where you can really have fun with your space, make it personal. Show off your worldly travels, inject mismatched textures from artisans all over the world. It embraces the imperfect and allows you to just relax and enjoy life and your surroundings.
And today I’m sharing a few key elements that can help you to recreate a fun filled modern boho look for kids.
Now please excuse the repeat images – i took these photos of my little girl’s bedroom when it was pouring with rain outside. And when Indi is home with me, she likes to play where I am. And rather than shoo her off when I photograph things, I let her join in the experience. It’s why she’s always in my shots. And on this day, she was playing with her babies, using her sister’s guitar to sing songs, and mesmerised by the heavy rain that was falling outside. It was a beautiful moment and I just kept on snapping as I chatted to her, and listened to her play. And the mother in me just can’t help but share.
But for now, let’s check out a few simple design tips to help create a boho vintage space…
How to create the boho vintage look for kids:
Upcycle:
Upcycling, it’s one of my fave things to do. I’m constantly changing things in my home but one of the first places I go is Gumtree or thrift stores. I love it because the peices you can find are full of character and bring that essential aged component to any boho room.
My home is FILLED with things that are either curb side finds, op shop treasures, gumtree bargains or market stall gems. In these pics the vintage cane bedhead, the turquoise side table , the cane magazine rack and the mini peacock chair were ALL Gumtree finds.
My fave – the original 1960’s vintage peacock bedhead! GAHHH – it helps cement the modern boho look and while it’s neither shiny or new, it’s fragile, old, imperfections are what makes it so darn amazing!
have fun with colour:
Kids love colour. Fullstop. And if you are after colour for kids, you can’t go past one of Australia’s fave kids lifestyle and homeware brands with colour exploding, off centre bedding and decor – Kip and CO. In this space all bedding (except for the star and pink smart cushion) are KIP and CO. With colour and texture galore, their incredible range works so effortlessly well with the boho look.
Tassels:
Tassels, essential. End of story. It’s those giant kip and co tassels that help bring in that relaxed, draped, earthy feel. They looked AMAZING in Summer’s space and they look just as incredible here. I think I need to steal them for my room next!
Macrame:
No boho space is complete without a little macrame. It’s that 70’s trend that just takes us back to a time when life was a little more carefree, where kids made daisy chains and mud pies, where modern technology was pretty much obsolete. Where you had to be home to schedule or make a phone call. The time when it seems everyone could breathe just that little bit easier.
Greenery:
Wether it’s a fresh bunch of flowers (the simpler the better) – a cool cactus or an edgy succulent, a little greenery adds life to a space. It reminds us to take that moment to stop. To appreciate, to relax, to reconnect with nature in this fast paced world we live in. It’s what boho is all about.
Personalise:
It’s little things that make a space that little more magical, like adding a cool poster that reminds us of legends passed by. The raggedy baby doll that has been handed down from sibling to sibling, loved and played with for years. Or hanging the flower crown you made pre-kids on holiday in Hawaii. The very thing that resurfaces memories of the warm sunshine and gentle waves crashing while you once dreamed of the children you would one day have. The thing that can now hang in their room, ready to be played with by your own little girl who dances with fairies and talks to the rain. It’s about creating your own life stories, and filling their room with magic and soul.
Follow these few key styling essentials and your on your own way to boho heaven. Just remember to have fun with it as some rules are made to be broken.
Till next time, ness X
